چکیده

The mechanical complexity of the hand is indisputable, but there is increasing evidence that its control is simplified in many tasks around synergic groups of muscles that effectively decrease the number of controlled degrees of freedom.

The bilateral reach-to-grasp movement of Parkinson's disease subjects.

The performance of simultaneous movements is said to be disrupted in Parkinson's disease, yet there are some indications that this dysfunction is less evident for bilateral inter-limb actions, as opposed to unilateral simultaneous actions. Focussing specifically upon natural actions, this study uses a three-dimensional kinematics system (ELITE) to assess the movement kinematics of a bilateral n...

The bilateral reach to grasp movement.

This study investigated the kinematic organization of bilateral reach to grasp movements. In Experiment 1 non-homologous bilateral movements were performed. One limb reached to grasp an object using whole hand prehension; the contralateral limb simultaneously reached to grasp an object using precision grip. Corresponding unilateral movements were assessed. Movement duration for each limb in the...

Closed-loop control of spinal cord stimulation to restore hand function after paralysis

As yet, no cure exists for upper-limb paralysis resulting from the damage to motor pathways after spinal cord injury or stroke. Recently, neural activity from the motor cortex of paralyzed individuals has been used to control the movements of a robot arm but restoring function to patients' actual limbs remains a considerable challenge. Previously we have shown that electrical stimulation of the...

Comparison of unilateral versus bilateral upper extremity task performance after stroke.

BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that practicing functional tasks bilaterally instead of unilaterally may improve paretic limb performance after stroke. OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were to determine whether the bilateral movement condition alters paretic limb performance of a functional task in people with poststroke hemiparesis and to identify specifically which parameters...

The effect of unilateral posteroventral pallidotomy on the kinematics of the reach to grasp movement.

OBJECTIVE To assess postoperative effects of unilateral posteroventral pallidotomy on the organisation of upper limb movement. METHODS A three dimensional kinematic system (ELITE, B/T/S/ Italy) was used to record reach to grasp movements to objects of either small (0.7 cm) or large (8 cm) diameter placed at a reaching distance of either 20 or 30 cm. Four patients with Parkinson's disease were...
